This parasite called a “mite” generally lives in peace and harmony on all dogs in the skin. Infection from this parasite occurs when the body’s immune system is unable to maintain this harmonious state with the demodex parasite. This is considered a genetic or inherited trait, and affected animals should not be used for breeding.
