How to get rid of Bed Bugs

Picking up furniture that you find on the street is a big NO NO!! It’s on the street for a reason. Sometimes cheap things turn out to be a lot more expensive. Also avoid buying used furniture on Craigslist. From New Jersey to South Hampton bed bugs are everywhere, take my word for it. A popular myth is that people get bed bugs because they are dirty. Nowadays that cannot be further from the truth. I have walked into homes that were immaculate, so clean you could eat off of their floors and they still had a bed bug infestation.

I once helped throw out a Ralph Lauren mattress. I didn’t even know Ralph Lauren made mattresses. There is absolutely no reason to be embarrassed, it happens. Recently it has been happening to most people, so you are definitely not alone. But the first step is to involve a professional exterminator. This bed bug problem is so big that the NY Times and the Daily News are constantly running articles on bed bugs, almost daily there is a new story on them. You can call one of our bed bug experts for a free phone consultation. Even if you don’t choose to use our services, we are here to help you through this, at least we can help guide your decision.

The Steaming Process Explained

We use a dry steaming machine. It sounds like an oxymoron but what it does is it uses more heat and less water in order to generate 275 degrees of dry steam. We use this steaming machine to heat up walls, dressers, night tables, couches , doors, chairs, any and all furniture and also include quarter rounds, window frames or anywhere in the room where a crack or crevice might exist.

We use a dry steam machine. It sounds like an oxymoron but it uses more heat and less water to generate 275 degrees of dry steam. We will heat up walls, dressers, night tables, couches , doors, chairs, any and all furniture and also include quarter rounds, window frames or anywhere in the room where a crack or crevice might exist.

The process has two functions:

  • 1) To kill the bedbug
  • 2) To force them out of hiding.

Imagine if you are taking a gallon of water, to represent the pesticide, and pouring it on a couch. There is no way that you get to every spot on the couch and to every crack and crevice. There are just too many layers.

Now use the same principle and let’s use a quart of steam at 275 degrees. Literally, we inject the wand in one side of the couch and it shoots out steam out the other side getting into every crack, every crevice, and every fold, literally going into every part of the couch ridding the couch of bedbugs without destroying it or causing any damage to the couch. Generally the couch looks like it was just cleaned. Actually no pest can survive that kind of heat, including dust mites.

The Chemicals

In a Compressed air sprayer first, we use a contact killer which does what it says, it kills on contact. Second, we use a long term residual pesticide that will continue to kill long after we are gone. The third chemical in our deadly mix is an IGR which stands for insect growth regulator.

This will stop their hunger, it will stop their growth and stop their reproduction. Last, but certainly not least, we use a synergist that bonds with the insecticide and does two of the following things;

The pesticide and does two things.

  • 1) Doesn’t allow the bedbugs to have any natural defense to pesticide and
  • 2) Doesn’t allow the pesticide to break down as quickly as it would without it.

The Dust

For this process we use a silica base pyrethrum dust that pierces the skin of the bed bugs and turns them off like a light switch. We will pump this powder inside electrical sockets, light sockets or any existing holes in the wall. Electrical circuitry such as televisions, stereos, and alarm clocks will also be powdered inside. The Silica base pyrethrum does not do any damage to the circuitry and protects it from infection.

The Cover

If needed, we will also encase your mattresses in a bedbug proof cover and also encase the box springs. At additional costs depending on the size of your mattress.

The Silicone

We will seal any crack and crevice that may exist in your area by using industrial strength silicone in any area we feel bedbugs are coming from and generally prevent any bug from entering the room from inside the walls. Again that is at an additional cost.Click here to find out more information on “How to protect your mattress”
